Ryan Family Therapy

Proudly Serves the U.S. Foreign Service Community

One of my specialties is working with the Foreign Service community. I have experience helping officers and their families navigate day-to-day hurdles and unique challenges like international moves and ordered departures or medevacs.

I get it.

I understand the Foreign Service lifestyle because I live it. I joined my spouse on this journey over 12 years ago, and we are raising our own children in the Foreign Service.  This life is an amazing adventure, and the skills and resilience we and our children build are amazing. The experiences cannot be matched.

But this life can be hard. Day-to-day challenges are often magnified by the stress of living in a new place or the losses we carry from our countless goodbyes. The Foreign Service lifestyle can also magnify symptoms of ADHD, anxiety, depression, anger management, and social skill deficits.

I understand:

  • What it feels like to not be able to speak the local language

  • The relief of your child making their first friend at post

  • The joy and chaos of the delivery of UAB and HHEs

  • The uncertainty and upheaval of an authorized/ordered departure

  • The sadness of having to say good-bye AGAIN

I can help.

I developed a toolbox of strategies to help build structures, routines, rituals, and improve communication and relationships.

Often, we just need some extra time to process the changes, challenges, and loss. Other times it is important to take a step back and look at the situation from a different angle.

It is important to know ourselves, what we need, and to find balance in those needs, for me it is:

  • Connection with family

  • Work

  • Fun

  • Exercise

  • Learning

  • Spirituality
